Following an April 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by members of the community, representatives of Neighborhood Development Company (NDC), city representatives, and project partners, this multi-unit affordable housing development has been welcoming new residents. The design-forward, amenity-filled units are fulfilling home ownership dreams for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity in a real estate environment like Washington, DC. “We believe the American Dream of home ownership should be available to everybody,” says Adrian G. Washington, NDC Founder and CEO. “Working with our partners, we can offer that opportunity while contributing to the vitality of the East Anacostia community.”
Park27 has 14 units sold, another 9 units under contract, and there is enormous interest in the remaining 3 units. The small details like mature landscaping and individual entrances for each unit contribute to a pleasant exterior that matches the light, spacious units that are a far cry from what affordable housing is rumored to be. Ward 7 has suffered from a generational gap in home ownership, and this development is a step towards resolving this lack. The location of Park27 is close to transportation, parks, and other amenities, so it is ideal for a family to launch their homeownership experience in Ward 7.
“As a native Washingtonian, I’ve seen firsthand the dramatic changes in our city that have made it harder and harder for longtime residents to own their own homes. With Park27, we not only wanted to increase affordable housing opportunities within the Hillcrest community, but we also wanted to go further and create an opportunity for families to build intergenerational wealth and security,” said Adrian. “With our partners, the DC Department of Housing and Community Development and LISC, we are proud to be doing our part in achieving Mayor Bowser’s housing goals.”
Mayor Bowser’s ambitious goals to address a significant housing crisis are being met by developments like Park27, representing a public/private/finance partnership with impressive results. NDC has a track record of success in this area, with hundreds of thousands of square feet of affordable housing developed in its history and in the works.
